Chaser: Unlocking the Genius of the Dog Who Knows a Thousand Words

The amazing story of a very smart Border collie who is redefining animal intelligence. Chaser has a way with words. She knows over a thousand of them—more than any other animal of any species except humans. In addition to common nouns like house, ball, and tree, she has memorized the names of more than one thousand toys and can retrieve any of them on command. Based on that learning, she and her owner and trainer, retired psychologist John Pilley, have moved on to further impressive feats, demonstrating her ability to understand sentences with multiple elements of grammar and to learn new behaviors by imitation. John's ingenuity and tenacity as a researcher are as impressive as Chaser's accomplishments. His groundbreaking approach has opened the door to a new understanding of animal intelligence, one that requires us to reconsider what actually goes on in a dog's mind. Chaser's achievements reveal her use of deductive reasoning and complex problem-solving skills to address novel challenges. Yet astonishingly, Chaser isn't unique. John's training methods can be adopted by any dog lover. Through the poignant story of how he trained Chaser, raised her as a member of the Pilley family, and proved her abilities to the scientific community, he reveals the positive impact of incorporating learning into play and more effectively channeling a dog's natural drives. John's work with Chaser offers a fresh perspective on what's possible in the relationship between a dog and a human. His story points us toward a new way of relating to our canine companions that takes into account our evolving understanding of the way animals and humans learn. http://www.chaserthebordercollie.com/ Video by Passerby Films www.passerbyfilms.com

The pet pooch has been by our side for thousands of years, but in all that time we’ve never really studied their behaviour scientifically. However researchers in the United States are now attempting to assess just how smart canines are. As Liz Hayes discovers, the big question they want to know is whether dogs love us like we love them – and after working out what goes on in a dog’s brain, they think they have the answer. *MORE VIDEOS like this one* ► https://youtu.be/F3uQ-9ryWGs ► https://youtu.be/TbCWnhA6t5k ► https://youtu.be/dNPUR_Y7fzE FOLLOW 60 Minutes Australia ► WATCH more of 60 Minutes Australia: https://www.60minutes.com.au ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/60Minutes9 ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/60Mins ► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/60minutes9 ABOUT 60 Minutes Australia For over forty years, 60 Minutes Australia have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. Memoir of Chaser, The Smartest Dog in the World with Pilley Bianchi

Memoir of Chaser, The Smartest Dog in the World Facebook Live with Pilley Bianchi, Co-trainer of Chaser in conversation with Mussarat Kang. Date & Time: 23rd July at 7:00 pm IST About Chaser & John Pilley: Chaser the Border Collie, known as “the smartest dog in the world” whose scientific smarts took the world by storm in 2011. Chaser died of natural causes on July 23rd, 2019. Chaser was 15 years old and the beloved pet dog of Dr. John W. Pilley, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Wofford College and Sally Pilley. Pilley set his sights on teaching his beloved and brilliant dog a record-busting vocabulary of 1000 proper nouns in addition to common nouns like a house, ball, and tree. Pilley and Chaser moved on to further impressive accomplishments exhibiting her ability to understand full sentences and to learn new behaviors by imitation. While this sounds like a head spinner even for humans, it was all fun and games for Chaser; the 1022 proper noun names were her toys that she logged into her long-term memory simply because she loved playing with them. About the Guest: Pilley Bianchi is the youngest daughter of John Pilley. She has had an extensive career in the music industry for 30 years and never imagined she would be utilizing those same skills to manage an “old man and his dog.” She has a very close personal relationship with Chaser and has surrendered to being outsmarted by her younger canine sister.
